(WNY News Now) – Dunkirk, NY – The City of Dunkirk and Primitive Patriot Outdoors join forces to present the inaugural Dunkirk Walleye Festival, scheduled to take place from May 31 to June 2 at the city pier. This festival promises a blend of competitive angling, family-friendly activities, and live entertainment, all centered around Lake Erie’s prized walleye.

Professional walleye anglers from across the region will converge for the 4th Annual WNY Walleye Classic, spearheaded by tournament director Josh Larsen. Simultaneously, Dunkirk Festivals Coordinator Ryan Hall will orchestrate the festival component, offering a diverse lineup of events aimed at engaging both seasoned anglers and local communities alike.

The highlight of the festival, the Primitive Patriot Outdoors WNY Walleye Classic, will feature teams of 2 to 5 anglers vying for top honors by weighing in their largest six catches. With lucrative payouts for the top ten teams and additional prizes for the three biggest fish, anticipation is high for another thrilling competition. Last year’s event saw 49 registered teams and over $35,000 awarded in prize money, underscoring the tournament’s growing popularity.

Josh Larsen stated: “Our tournament is the fastest growing tournament on Lake Erie in New York. Our goal is to build a professional tournament that anglers and the public can enjoy while we take pride in providing a fair, transparent, and professional experience for our anglers in the City of Dunkirk.”

Central to the festival’s mission is fostering camaraderie within the outdoor community while showcasing Lake Erie’s abundant walleye population. Events like Big Fish Friday, where teams depart from various harbors before converging in Dunkirk for weigh-ins and live entertainment, epitomize this ethos. Musical performances from bands like 1980 Something and West of the Mark – The Prime Project add to the festive atmosphere, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

Saturday’s main event kicks off with boat checks at dawn, culminating in a dramatic shotgun start as teams race to their fishing spots along the picturesque shores of Lake Erie. Spectators are encouraged to witness the spectacle as over 40 boats set off in pursuit of the elusive walleye. The day concludes with another exhilarating weigh-in show, where the largest catches are unveiled amidst eager anticipation.

Throughout the festival, attendees can explore an array of food, craft, and fishing gear vendors, ensuring a vibrant marketplace atmosphere. For families, Sunday’s kids’ fishing clinic and tournament, led by pro angler Craig Sleeman, offer a chance for young enthusiasts to hone their skills and compete for exciting prizes, including a guided fishing trip with Sleeman himself.

For those interested in participating in the WNY Walleye Classic or securing vendor opportunities, registration details are available on the Primitive Patriot Outdoors website or by contacting Josh Larsen directly. Similarly, inquiries regarding festival sponsorship can be directed to Ryan Hall through the City of Dunkirk’s official website.
