(WNY News Now) – Brooklyn, NY – May 20, 2024 – The Libertarian Party of New York (LPNY) has strongly denounced the decade-long prison sentence handed down to Dexter Taylor, an amateur gunsmith, for legally purchasing and assembling firearms at his home.

Judge Abena Darkeh, who delivered the verdict, dismissed the relevance of the Second Amendment in her courtroom, stating, “The Second Amendment doesn’t exist in my courtroom.” LPNY is calling for Governor Kathy Hochul to pardon Taylor immediately and to take steps to protect the constitutional freedoms of all New Yorkers.

Jeff Charles, a political commentator from Louisiana, expressed his outrage: “What is being done to Dexter Taylor is a vicious violation of his natural right to keep and bear arms. New York’s government wants to use him to send a message. Dexter is not only fighting for his own freedom, he is also fighting for the rest of us. We can’t allow this to happen because the stakes are far too high. It’s time to stand up and push back against those who would attack our natural rights.”

Dexter Taylor, a 53-year-old Brooklyn resident, was sentenced on May 13, 2024, for possessing and assembling “ghost guns” in his Bushwick apartment. Despite his clean record and law-abiding history, Taylor was convicted on multiple firearms-related charges. The NYPD and ATF’s raid on his home uncovered four AR-15 style rifles, five handguns, four additional rifles, and over 50 rounds of ammunition, along with various gun-building components.

LPNY argues that this severe sentence, influenced by Judge Darkeh’s controversial stance, exemplifies a troubling erosion of constitutional rights under the guise of public safety. The party also highlights the apparent contradiction between Judge Darkeh’s self-professed human rights advocacy and her actions in this case.

Natural Rights Activist Doni Anthony commented, “When a judge decides that a fundamental right, like the Second Amendment, doesn’t apply in their courtroom, they’re not just bending the law—they are breaking it. By declaring this, the judge denied Dexter Taylor his Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial and to present a complete defense. It’s a textbook case for 18 U.S.C. § 242 violations—abuse of judicial power under the guise of legal authority.”

The LPNY is also demanding the removal of Judge Abena Darkeh and District Attorney Eric Gonzalez for their roles in what they describe as a miscarriage of justice. They assert that these officials are using Taylor as a political pawn.

Taylor’s family has set up a legal defense fund to help cover the costs of his ongoing legal battle. The LPNY urges supporters of the Second Amendment and liberty advocates to contribute to his GiveSendGo campaign: Dexter Taylor 2A Legal Fund.

  1. Drop all charges on Gunsmith. Fire judge and DA, charge both w breaking the law, taking law into their own conception, prosecute and sentence to fullest extent of limits. Prosecuting them FULLY will show others what will happen if a person’s office is misused for prejudicial purposes.

    1. I couldn’t agree more!!!

  2. The judge needs to be disbarred…or disciplined at least.

  3. This is the start of communism.

  4. You are absolutely right, if the law don’t dis bar them we have no more law.

  5. All of NY’s legislation needs to be removed and start a new and put in place those who truly believe in the Constitution and what it stands for and mean to the citizens of NY and all Americans.

You people need to stop making excuses. Oh my guns my guns dude doesn’t need ghost guns .it is against the law

  7. No, it’s NOT against the law. That’s the point. There is no law on the books that bans the personal manufacture of firearms in your home. There is no law requiring that a personally manufactured firearm be registered with any authority. The guy literally did nothing wrong. NOT against the law. And the judge openly stated that their intent was to ignore and violate the Second Amendment.

  8. That’s correct! The judge was violating the law and using it as a crutch to push her ignorance to the constitution and push her political interests thinking she’s untouchable because she’s a judge. She needs to be arrested for going against the constitution and using her power against the locksmith illegally.

  9. Virginia Benett, it says in the headlines…Gunsmith sentenced to prison for LEGAL FIREARM!

  10. The liberal socialists democrats have no respect for the constitution. They give hudlums and eligail aliens a free pass when robbing stealing and shooting but when someone is within their 2nd ammendment rights they have chosen to make a example. It’s not the job of a judge to write law only inforce it. On election day vote this garbage out of office or maybe leave New York It’s probably to late most of the good people have left to red states.

  11. Any Judge who who states that anything in the US Constitution doesn’t exist in his courtroom should be removed and disbarred.

  12. How much longer are we going to sit by and let this happen?

  13. Why is this “Judge” not being immediately removed from the bench. This is a blatant violation of, and oral admission of violation, of his oath of office! These miscreants show their true colors, and nothing is ever done!
