(WNY News Now) – New York – In a sharp statement, Governor Kathy Hochul condemned Congressional Republicans for their recent obstruction of a bipartisan bill aimed at securing the U.S. borders and addressing the ongoing migrant and asylum seeker crisis. The legislation, crafted by President Biden and Senator Schumer, was touted as the toughest and fairest border bill in decades. However, it failed to advance due to a lack of Republican support.

“Here we go again: Republicans in Congress have once again blocked bipartisan legislation to secure our border and address the migrant and asylum seeker crisis. President Biden and Senator Schumer negotiated the toughest, fairest border bill in decades — but the legislation fell apart because one party refuses to compromise. The only way out of this crisis is for New York’s 10 Members of Congress who serve in the majority to march into Speaker Johnson’s office and demand he pass bipartisan legislation that helps New York. Everything else is just talk,” stated Governor Hochul.

The impasse highlights a recurring pattern of legislative gridlock, with critics accusing Republicans of using the border issue as a wedge to influence the upcoming 2024 election. This latest development reinforces the challenges facing one of the least productive Congresses in U.S. history, raising more questions about the prospects for future bipartisan cooperation on critical national issues.
