(WNY News Now) – Mayville, NY – In a united effort to combat impaired driving, Chautauqua County police and STOP-DWI Coordinators are launching a high-visibility campaign over Memorial Day weekend.

Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone announced today that local police agencies and STOP-DWI Coordinators will participate in a statewide initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. This concerted effort, known as the STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign, will take place from May 25th through May 27th, coinciding with one of the busiest travel holidays of the year—Memorial Day, which traditionally marks the start of summer.

New York State Police, County Sheriffs, municipal law enforcement agencies, and local STOP-DWI Programs will work together across the state to reduce the number of injuries and deaths related to impaired driving. The Memorial Day Weekend campaign is just one of many initiatives supported by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Other key periods targeted by this campaign include the 4th of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the Holiday Season, Super Bowl weekend, and St. Patrick’s Day.

The goal of the STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign is to employ highly visible and well-publicized efforts to significantly decrease the incidence of drunk and impaired driving. Sheriff Quattrone emphasized that community involvement is crucial for the success of these initiatives.

“Having a Sober Plan is essential,” Quattrone stated. “We encourage everyone to download our mobile app—‘Have a Plan’—which can help you always find a safe ride home.” The app, available at www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp, aims to make planning easier and ensure everyone gets home safely. Sheriff Quattrone underscored that impaired driving is entirely preventable with a bit of foresight and responsible decision-making.

As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, Chautauqua County residents and visitors are reminded of the serious consequences of impaired driving. Law enforcement will be out in full force, and the increased visibility and enforcement aim to deter individuals from making dangerous choices.
