JAMESTOWN, NY — On May 26, 2024, a structure fire at 71 Allen Street prompted a swift response from the Jamestown Fire Department (JFD), with significant support from local agencies.
At 10:28 AM, an alarm was raised reporting smoke and the smell of smoke emanating from a basement apartment. Upon arrival, JFD found light smoke venting from the eaves of the residence. Engine Company 3 entered the home, discovering a fire in Apartment 3. They quickly extinguished the blaze using a 1 3/4-inch handline. Ladder Company 1 conducted a primary search, ensuring all occupants, including two dogs and two cats, evacuated safely. No civilian injuries were reported.
Engine Company 4 established a hydrant connection and pulled a backup line to the second floor. During overhaul operations, additional fire was found in the ceiling of Apartment 4.
The Jamestown Police Department (JPD), Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU), Department of Defense (DOD), and ALSTAR EMS provided crucial assistance at the scene. The BPU secured the power, and National Fuel turned off the gas supply to the house. The Red Cross supported the seven adults displaced by the fire, ensuring their needs were met for the holiday weekend. Mayor Kim Ecklund was also present at the scene.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries. The incident commander, Re Alm, confirmed the cause of the fire was accidental, due to carelessly discarded matches.
The fire department returned to the station by 1:00 PM. Smoke alarms in the residence were functional, contributing to the safe evacuation of all occupants.
