BUFFALO, NY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a heat advisory from June 17 at 6:30 AM EDT until June 20 at 8:00 PM EDT. This advisory warns of extreme heat with index values soaring up to 100°F.

Residents of the Niagara Frontier and the western Southern Tier should prepare for sweltering conditions starting from noon on Tuesday through to Thursday evening. The combination of high temperatures and humidity poses significant health risks, potentially leading to heat-related illnesses.

Impact and Safety Measures

The hot temperatures and oppressive humidity levels can lead to serious health issues, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, and pets, are especially at risk.

Recommendations for Safety:

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Cool Environment: Remain in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.
  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Limit time spent outdoors and avoid direct sunlight.
  • Check on Others: Look after relatives and neighbors, particularly those who are vulnerable.
  • Pet Safety: Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as interior temperatures can become fatal within minutes.

The NWS Buffalo urges everyone to take these precautions seriously to prevent heat-related health issues. Ensuring you and your loved ones are safe during this heatwave is crucial.
