On June 19, 2024, a sudden flash flood inundated the city of Olean, prompting an urgent response from local emergency services.
Late Wednesday night, the City of Olean experienced a severe flash flood that overwhelmed the community, resulting in over 55 emergency calls to the City of Olean Fire Department and Police Department. The deluge began at approximately 10:17 PM, leading to widespread chaos and damage across the city.
Among the numerous incidents, a partial building collapse occurred at 1615 W. State St., multiple power lines were downed, and vehicles were stranded in flooded roadways. Additionally, residents reported flooded basements, automatic fire and medical alarms were triggered, and there were EMS calls. Although there was a report of a possible structure fire, it turned out to be unfounded.
In response to the disaster, the City of Olean Fire Department, in coordination with the Cattaraugus County Office of Emergency Services, quickly established a command post at the Central Fire Station to organize and prioritize the flood-related calls. The situation necessitated assistance from several outside agencies, including National Grid, NYSEG, Allegany Fire Department, Weston Mills Fire Department, Portville Fire Department, and Town of Olean Fire Department. Additionally, District 4 fire departments were put on standby in their quarters, ready to respond if needed.
Remarkably, there were no reported injuries during the incident.
In the aftermath of the flood, the City of Olean Fire Department issued a crucial reminder to the public: do not drive vehicles through flooded roadways or standing water, as it can be extremely dangerous. They also highlighted the risks of electrical hazards in flooded basements, urging residents to avoid entering these areas.
Property owners who suffered damages are encouraged to report their cases to Cattaraugus County Emergency Services, where they may find possible assistance.
