(WNY News Now) – A tornado warning has been issued by NWS Buffalo NY effective until 2:15 PM EDT for areas including Wellsville, Alfred, and Whitesville, following the detection of a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado.

At 1:58 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm with potential tornado activity was identified near Whitesville, approximately 7 miles east of Wellsville. The storm is moving northeast at 35 mph, posing imminent hazards to the following locations: Wellsville, Alfred, Whitesville, Andover, Alma, Almond, Stannards, and Paynesville.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of flying debris that could endanger those caught without shelter, particularly impacting mobile homes and causing significant damage to roofs, windows, vehicles, and trees. Radar indications suggest rotational activity within the storm, heightening the risk of tornado formation.

Residents in affected areas are strongly advised to take immediate protective measures. Seek shelter in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows and remain indoors until the warning is lifted. Those outdoors, in mobile homes, or in vehicles should seek the nearest substantial shelter immediately to avoid potential injury from flying debris.
