(WNY News Now) – New York – New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) reaffirm their commitment to supporting customers grappling with unpaid energy bills, as arrears surge past $200 million.
New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) today announced continued support for customers struggling with unpaid bills for electricity and gas services. With arrears for NYSEG and RG&E customers surpassing $200 million, the utilities are stepping up assistance efforts.
Christine Alexander, vice president of Customer Service at NYSEG and RG&E, stated, “We understand that financial challenges can lead to customers falling behind on their bills, and we have help to get them back on track. When past-due bills are taken care of, all customers benefit, as rate payers share the burden of unpaid balances.”
To address the growing debt, NYSEG and RG&E offer various assistance programs. Project Share has provided nearly 63,000 families with grants totaling over $17 million since 1982. Eligible customers could receive a $200 credit towards their bills. Federally and utility-funded programs like the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) and Energy Assistance Program (EAP) help customers manage energy costs, repairs, and weatherization. Qualifying customers could receive monthly credits on their bills.
Billing support programs are accessible online or by phone: NYSEG customers can call 888.315.1755, and RG&E customers can call 877.266.3492.
High arrears increase costs for all customers since New York State law mandates utilities to continue supplying energy to those in financial distress. During the pandemic, utility collections were suspended to ease the burden on ratepayers, but timely bill payments are crucial for NYSEG and RG&E to maintain safe, reliable service and fund essential upgrades and community initiatives.
Payments support critical infrastructure improvements and energy efficiency projects, align with New York State’s climate goals, and bolster economic development and corporate philanthropy. Customers in arrears receive multiple notifications before any disconnection, including billing notices, reminders, phone calls, termination notices, and in-person visits, as required by the New York State Public Service Commission.
NYSEG and RG&E offer deferred payment agreements and other forms of assistance for qualifying customers. Payment plans can be arranged online or by contacting customer service at 800.572.111 (NYSEG) or 800.743.2110 (RG&E).
