Several Western New York colleges are bucking the nationwide trend of low enrollment figures by providing greater access to a variety of regional sports. Nominated as one of the country’s best value colleges, Niagara University has seen a significant rise in the number of students enrolling in their College of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism after offering mentoring and internships from regional sports clubs including the Sabres hockey team. Other prominent sports played at universities in the region include soccer, basketball, volleyball and lacrosse. The recent induction of a pioneer in the world of women’s wrestling at varsity level to the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame highlights the growing popularity of women’s wrestling over the past few years, and the sport has more recently been introduced at Buffalo State University. Sport is viewed as an essential element of university life for many students and coaches and in WNY, college athletes have a great choice of sports programs in which they are well-supported and celebrated for their achievements.

Prominent Players Join the Purple Eagles at Niagara University

The high level of play, talented teammates and great coaches are some of factors that attract talented athletes to join sporting teams at Niagara University. In May, the head soccer coach  announced the addition of five newcomers to the Purple Eagles, four freshmen and one transfer student. They will be ready for the 2024 season which starts with a home match against UAlbany on August 22. As well as enjoying the university’s good reputation for teaching and athletics, some of the new players chose Niagara as it was close to home while one student has come all the way from Ireland. Although last year he was named Gaelic Football Player of the Year, he is hoping that this move abroad will push him even further out of his comfort zone. With top college performers garnering attention on the field, the new season promises to be exciting for sporting enthusiasts.

Establishing a Women’s Wrestling Program at Buffalo State University

Last year, Buffalo State Athletics became the latest SUNY school with a program for women’s wrestling and the fifth in New York State to form a team. The sport has grown in popularity over the past few years and once the university recognized women’s wrestling as an emerging sport in 2022, the next step was to create a program.  While there has been some controversy over the restructuring of the wrestling program, including the release of the current team’s coaches, officials from Buffalo State have announced that the college is still committed to nurturing a thriving women’s wrestling program, starting with entrance to competitions scheduled in the fall. With the addition of women’s wrestling, together with men’s volleyball and acrobatics and tumbling, the university now offers a total of 21 intercollegiate sports programs at the University.

Celebrating the Excellence of the Bowling Team at Daemen University

While college sports are very important to many students, rather than detracting from studies, they can also reinforce academic achievement.  Four members of the women’s bowling team at Daemen University have recently been recognized for their academic excellence, having achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 during the 2023 to 2024 academic year. The academic honors award was given by the National Tenpin Coaches Association which also acknowledged the team as an All-Academic Team. Achieving consistently high grades and performing equally well on the bowling lanes serves to show the students’ versatility and commitment to all round excellence at University. Other women’s sports offered at the University include cross country, tennis and triathlon while men’s sports also include golf and soccer. In intercollegiate athletics the University is represented by the Daemen Wildcats.

Sport and athletics are an important part of student life and colleges and universities in the region are offering a wide variety of sports programs to college athletes. These are attracting top college performers to WNY universities, where they are enjoying the support of their coaches and other regional sports clubs. Far from sport being a distraction from studies, college athletes who perform well on the field are also being celebrated for their academic excellence.
