(WNY News Now) – Hanover – An Amherst resident faces DWI charges following a traffic stop in Hanover, where deputies say he failed to stop at a stop sign.
On the evening of August 4, 2024, around 8:07 p.m., deputies from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on Allegany Road in the Town of Hanover. The vehicle’s operator, identified as 59-year-old Thomas J. Abt from Amherst, NY, was stopped after failing to halt at a stop sign.
During the stop, deputies conducted an investigation and determined that Abt was driving while intoxicated (DWI). He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Hanover substation for processing. Following the procedure, Abt was released with citations and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Hanover court at a later date to face charges. As are all persons accused of a crime, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
