(WNY News Now) – An evening boating trip in Bemus Bay turned into a harrowing experience for Michael Giarrizzo Sr., 86, and Barbara J. Giarrizzo, 83, both of Ashville, New York, on August 16, 2024. The couple was navigating their vessel through Bemus Narrows near the Stow Ferry when they encountered a sudden mechanical failure that quickly escalated into a life-threatening situation.

Michael Giarrizzo, who was operating the boat, noticed an unusual clicking noise coming from the engine compartment. As he inspected the source of the sound, smoke began to billow out. Upon opening the engine cover, the boat instantly burst into flames, forcing the couple to abandon the vessel.

In a desperate move, both Michael and Barbara grabbed flotation devices and leaped into the lake to escape the spreading fire. Their quick action was met with an equally swift response from nearby boaters and a swimmer on shore, who rushed to their aid. The good Samaritans were able to pull the elderly couple from the water and bring them safely to shore.

Thanks to the rapid intervention of these individuals, Michael and Barbara Giarrizzo escaped the incident without injury. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
