(WNY News Now) – Rochester – A Rochester man received a sentence of probation for his involvement in a multi-state illegal sports betting ring that raked in thousands of dollars daily.
James Civiletti, 33, of Rochester, NY, was sentenced to one year of probation for his participation in a widespread illegal sports betting operation. Chief U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford delivered the sentence after Civiletti was convicted of conspiracy to transmit wagering information across state lines and conducting an illegal gambling business.
According to the prosecution, Civiletti, alongside several co-conspirators, operated the illicit betting enterprise between April 2019 and April 2021. The ring, managed by Louis Ferrari II, Dominic Sprague, Anthony Amato, Tomasso Sessa, Joseph Lombardo, and Jeffrey Boscarino, generated approximately $2,000 in daily revenue. The group collected and distributed gambling proceeds through cash transactions and online payment platforms like CashApp, PayPal, Venmo, and Zelle.
Civiletti, along with Sessa, played a crucial role in collecting gambling winnings and disbursing payments to individual bettors. The illegal operation’s complexity and reach prompted an extensive investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations, with support from multiple federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
