As summer fades and the corn silage harvest begins, rural roads in Southwest New York are becoming busier with slow-moving vehicles (SMVs) such as tractors, construction tools, and animal-drawn vehicles. These SMVs are vital for the agricultural and construction sectors, but they also pose a challenge for drivers unaccustomed to encountering them on their daily commutes.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Team is urging drivers to be mindful and share the road responsibly to prevent accidents and ensure everyone’s safety. Here are some essential tips for navigating roads during this busy season:

• Slow Down: Match your speed with the SMV you’re approaching. Use the opportunity to appreciate the scenic landscape that makes our region unique.
• Follow at a Distance: Maintain a safe distance behind SMVs. Remember, operators may have limited visibility due to the equipment they are towing.
• Pass with Care: Be cautious when passing SMVs, especially when they might turn into hidden driveways or fields. Always ensure it’s safe before overtaking.
• Stay Vigilant: Keep your attention on the road and be prepared for the unexpected, such as sudden turns or swaying equipment.

With the increased presence of SMVs during the harvest season, it’s critical to exercise patience and caution.
