(WNY News Now) – A Buffalo man, Sharief R. McBroom, 21, was sentenced to 22 years to life in prison for a deadly nightclub shooting that claimed the life of one victim and injured two others. McBroom received his sentence before State Supreme Court Justice Debra Givens on charges that included second-degree murder, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.

The incident occurred on Sunday, February 12, 2023, around 2:30 a.m. inside a nightclub on Michigan Avenue in Buffalo. McBroom, armed with an illegal firearm, opened fire after a brief altercation. The gunfire killed 21-year-old Jorge Garcia Leon, who died at the scene, and left two others, a 49-year-old man and a 59-year-old man, injured. Both survivors were rushed to the hospital.

In July 2024, McBroom pleaded guilty to all charges, which included second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. Erie County Acting District Attorney Michael J. Keane stressed the senseless nature of the crime and commended law enforcement for their swift response.

“This was a completely senseless, violent crime. This defendant snuck an illegal gun into a nightclub then intentionally fired multiple shots at the victims after a minor altercation. There was no reduced plea offered in this case. I hope that the family of Jorge Garcia Leon and the two survivors feel that justice has been served by this defendant pleading guilty to all counts and being sentenced to a significant term of incarceration,” said Acting District Attorney Mike Keane.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Christopher S. Safulko.
