(WNY News Now) – Governor Kathy Hochul and Superintendent Steven G. James honored 181 new State Troopers during the 215th graduation ceremony at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.
Albany, N.Y. – Governor Kathy Hochul celebrated the addition of 181 new troopers to the New York State Police during a ceremony at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. These graduates join one of the nation’s most prestigious law enforcement agencies, increasing the State Police’s ranks to 5,183 sworn members.
“I commend these 181 men and women for dedicating themselves to public service, and their commitment to protecting the people of New York State,” Governor Hochul said. “The New York State Police put their lives on the line each day to keep us safe, serving as a critical lifeline for all New Yorkers. On behalf of the State, I want to thank the graduates for their perseverance and welcome them to the long gray line.”
Superintendent Steven G. James praised the graduates for completing six months of challenging training, stating, “Today’s graduation is the culmination of six months of difficult classwork, physical training, and sacrifice, and we now welcome our newest members to one of the most prestigious and well-respected law enforcement agencies in the nation. I am confident they are equipped to carry out our mission to serve our communities with the same professionalism and pride the State Police have exhibited for the past 107 years.”
The ceremony recognized several standout graduates. Trooper Brian Leahey, a U.S. Army veteran from Farmington, NY, received the Academic Achievement Award, having earned a 96.42% average in training. Trooper Tanner Rarrick from Painted Post, NY, was honored with the Firearms Proficiency Award for his perfect score in firearms training. Trooper Gavin Mannion from Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, received the Physical Fitness Award for scoring highest in the Academy’s physical agility tests.
Following the ceremony, the new troopers will begin field duty under the supervision of senior Field Training Officers on October 23, 2024, completing 10 weeks of on-the-job evaluation.
