(WNY News Now) – An Amherst man has admitted to the brutal killing of his mother, pleading guilty to manslaughter charges nearly two years after the tragic domestic incident that shocked the community.

Buffalo, N.Y. – Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced that Om D. Samant, 36, of Amherst, pleaded guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree, a Class “B” violent felony. The plea was entered before State Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Haendiges and is in full satisfaction of the indictment against him.

The violent incident occurred on December 26, 2022, when Amherst Police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Thistle Lea. Officers arrived to find that Samant had fatally beaten and stabbed his mother, 58-year-old Jagruti Samant, inside their shared home. Police confirmed her death at the scene.

Samant is now facing a maximum prison sentence of 25 years. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 17, 2024. He remains in custody without bail.

Acting DA Keane praised the Amherst Police Department for their swift and thorough investigation. The case was handled by Assistant District Attorney Frank A. Strano of the Major Crimes Bureau and Deputy District Attorney John P. Feroleto.
