(WNY News Now) – A boost in federal funding will enhance emergency medical response and support first responders tackling public health crises in rural communities.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) announced that the City of Jamestown has been awarded $187,672 in federal funding as part of the Rural EMS Training and Equipment Assistance program. Administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), this funding will be used to enhance EMS training and provide essential equipment to first responders serving the rural areas of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties.
“Our first responders in Jamestown are on the front lines of the public health challenges we face, like substance abuse disorders, often providing life-saving care,” said Congressman Langworthy. “I’ve always been a strong advocate for the men and women who serve our community, and this grant is a direct investment in their ability to do their jobs safely and effectively. We’re supporting their critical work and increasing public health and safety in Jamestown and rural communities by providing them with the training and tools they need.”
Specifically, this grant will fund a project led by the Jamestown Fire Department to increase outreach and engagement activities in the City of Jamestown, Chautauqua County, and Cattaraugus County. The project will provide advanced training on substance use disorders (SUD), trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention techniques. EMS personnel will also have access to essential equipment, improving their ability to respond effectively to emergencies, particularly in rural areas.
The Rural EMS Training and Equipment Assistance (REMSTEA) program, administered by SAMHSA, provides funding to rural communities to strengthen their emergency medical services. This program ensures that first responders in underserved areas are prepared to meet the unique challenges they face, including the growing need for services related to mental health and substance use disorders in rural areas.
