Jamestown is no stranger to a good restaurant and coffee shop. From the big chains like Tim Hortons to The Coffe Shop, Hotspot Cafe, and the Crown Street Roasting Company, we openly celebrate our love of the little black bean and casual dining. We’ve also built on these experiences by combining them with fun activities and we’ve all seen with the Game Time Sports Bar & Grill. As great as these establishments are, we also have to wonder if we might take them a step further, specifically by way of greater investment in Jamestown’s underrepresented electronic gaming market.

By exploring the possible options from digital gaming, there’s a lot of potential that Jamestown could uncover. Of course, we’re no strangers to doing something new, as our experience in and legacy in the NY furniture industry shows. With that in mind, what kind of options are available here, and how might it benefit Jamestown on a social and economic level?

What Kind of Experiences?

If you grew up in the age of the video game arcade, you’ll have some idea what we’re talking about with gaming cafes, but this traditional experience is only one part of the equation. In the modern age, developed PC and console gaming spaces offer myriad options to choose from. These range from the more casual options built into browsers to hardcore eSports titles that could even aid in Jamestown developing its own teams.

A popular example here could be found in the landscape of online casino games. Players could check out offerings like Golden Nugget casino bonus codes, which provide special welcome features like deposit matches. While these services are just as playable on mobile systems, a cafe experience could help bolster the social atmosphere of playing with friends in titles like slots and table games. You could even hold tournaments in competitive card games like poker.

In more traditional video gaming, a dedicated playing space provided by gaming cafes could help both fun and serious competitive play. Called eSports, this kind of competition is underrepresented in Jamestown, though it offers huge potential in building team skills and even possible career choices.

Looking Towards the Future

The growth and value of eSports in the modern market have rapidly developed to a level few predicted. Back in 2019, winners of the largest tournament in a game called Dota 2 won more money than top Wimbledon players, and the prize money on offer is only growing. This is matched by growing player numbers, as new generations of competitors are raised into the competitive gaming landscape. There are already a huge number right here in Jamestown, even if we don’t often see them.

It might seem like a stretch, but the success of gaming cafes in other markets has already shown what is possible. The scene in Korea demonstrates the upper limits of success, with the right interest. The first gaming cafe in Korea, called a PC bang, opened in 1988. With the explosion of online and social gaming, Korea today offers around 20,000 PC bangs. While Jamestown obviously can’t compete with Korea’s total population, there are still enormous opportunities to explore here for developing a local scene, aiding our economy, and paving the way for others.

Leveraging Our Location for Competitive Success

In any sport, you can only become as good as your competition. This can be problematic for players in regions with few competitors, as there’s no big group pushing each other to improve. This is still the case in the age of online, with physical distance still being an enormous concern for fast-paced internet play.

It just so happens that, in NY State, we’re near one of the most competitive gaming zones in the world. Some of the best players and teams on the globe call NYC home, with a large population also providing ample opponents to fight against. Compared to a place like New Zealand or South Africa, we have a real leg up, if our players are willing to put in the work. Of course, not everybody needs to compete professionally, but this also means that casual players will have a far easier time finding cooperation and rivals.

Paving the Way

Nothing worth having comes easy, and exploring new ground in a place without a strong existing gaming scene will undoubtedly prove a challenge. With that said, the sooner we invest, the sooner we can start making waves. Jamestown has already led the world in other areas and produced some of the finest talents in entertainment. It’s entirely possible that we could do the same in making small local gaming scenes standard, while also creating an example for our neighbours to follow.

As we’ve seen with the recent arrival of the Puddle Pity Party, Jamestown is happy to explore new experiences, no matter how unusual they might seem. A greater investment in digital gaming cafes could be just another example, and it’s an area where we could really blaze a trail. It’s just a matter of somebody setting an example, and taking the first big leap.
