(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties, forecasting up to 30 inches of snow through Tuesday evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning in effect until 7:00 PM EST on Tuesday, December 3. The warning highlights heavy lake effect snow with potential accumulations ranging from 18 to 30 inches in areas experiencing the most persistent snowfall, particularly across Chautauqua County and western portions of Cattaraugus County.
Travelers are advised to prepare for extremely hazardous conditions as visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to intense snowfall and blowing snow. Roads are expected to be deeply covered, making travel exceptionally challenging. The NWS urges drivers to delay travel plans if possible or exercise extreme caution by:
- Allowing extra time to reach destinations,
- Maintaining greater distance from other vehicles,
- Avoiding abrupt braking and acceleration,
- Taking extra care on hills and during turns.
The snow is expected to fall in narrow bands, which can cause rapidly changing conditions. These fluctuations may lead to localized heavy snowfall and sudden reductions in visibility.
Residents are encouraged to submit snow reports through the NWS website or social media platforms to assist in tracking storm developments.
