(WNY News Now) – A routine response to a vehicle accident in Ashford led to the arrest of a local man on drunk driving charges early Friday morning.

ASHFORD, NY — James D. Roberts, 37, of Ashford, NY, was arrested for driving while intoxicated following a motor vehicle accident on Thornwood Drive in the Town of Ashford.

According to Sheriff Eric A. Butler, deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:06 a.m. on December 6, 2024, where they discovered a pickup truck that had veered off the road and landed in a ditch. Roberts was found behind the wheel of the vehicle.

An investigation conducted at the scene revealed clear signs of intoxication. Roberts was taken into custody and charged with several offenses under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law, including:

  • Driving While Intoxicated (VTL 1192[3])
  • Unsafe Lane Change (VTL 1128C)
  • Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent (VTL 1180A)
  • Additional related violations

Roberts was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Ashford Court at a later date to face the charges. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
