The American Gaming Association, also known as AGA, has introduced a new pillar to its “Have A Game Plan, Bet Responsibly” campaign. It’s called “Keep Your Cool” and its aim is to curb harmful behavior, highlighting the importance of respect for all those involved in online gaming activities.

Various forms of harassment and online abuse are addressed and bettors are reminded that a negative result cannot be used as a justification to engage in harmful behavior. Casino games of all types, such as slot machines or sports betting markets should be enjoyed responsibly and in a mature way, with the expectation that you cannot always win.

Responsible Gaming Awareness

The “Keep Your Cool” pillar is part of AGA’s bigger goal to promote and uphold standards of responsible gaming. This particular campaign has had a 66% approval rate from the public. Americans, in general, view such initiatives as necessary and effective.

Among active participants in igaming, nearly 4 out of 5 are supportive of AGA’s “Keep Your Cool” pillar. And among sports bettors, 85% endorse the efforts made by the association.

The President of AGA, Bill Miller, stressed the significance of this move and its role in fostering an enjoyable gambling environment. A healthy attitude toward betting and a safe environment are absolutely necessary.

Legislative Implications

“Keep Your Cool” represents a shift in how industry participants view and approach responsible gaming. Some states, such as Wyoming, have gone one step further, barring harassers from participating in legal gambling activities. This decision is designed to discourage people from toxic behaviors that can lead to unpleasant experiences.

At the moment, the US gaming landscape is undergoing major changes. These changes are the direct result of the new betting legislation, whose role is to better regulate gambling activities in the country and ensure that all parties participate in them in a civilized way.

It’s estimated that by the end of 2025, almost every US state will have some form of legal sports betting or igaming activities. Naturally, this expansion requires new rules and awareness campaigns, such as the one conducted by the American Gaming Association.

In the absence of robust legal rules and awareness campaigns that promote healthy attitudes, the risk of descending into chaos would be high.

Expected Effects

The “Keep Your Cool” campaign is expected to have a positive effect on a large number of people, who will probably learn more about responsible gaming and engage in gambling activities with an understanding that certain types of behavior are discouraged by the entire community.

Another effect of the campaign might be that other industries will be inspired to do something similar if necessary. “Keep Your Cool” sets a precedent and makes it normal for people in a position of authority to take preemptive measures against toxic behaviors and practices that could easily ruin the experience of everyone involved.

Just take a look at competitive gaming, for instance, and you will see why awareness campaigns are necessary. Many young people, whenever they lose a game, become extremely upset and they start behaving in irrational ways.

The fact that the action is happening online makes harmful behaviors even more likely because gamers feel disconnected from the person they are communicating with. They also don’t perceive any physical threat, so they scream and write whatever they want. In most cases, they also get away with it because toxic behavior has become the norm in many communities.

But if you have clear rules that are enforced, as well as awareness campaigns that make participants understand that the community as a whole does not accept harmful and toxic behavior, the likelihood of individuals being extremely impolite is much lower.

The problem here is that companies, in general, don’t want to lose a customer, even if that customer makes other customers leave. But sometimes, it is absolutely necessary to make a point and show that certain actions will not be tolerated.

There are quite a few online games whose communities have suffered and lost many members because of bad actors. Cheaters, for instance, will ruin a game for everyone involved because, after a while, nobody can be sure anymore that the game is fair for all.
