(WNY News Now) – Rochester, N.Y. – Michael Elmore, 33, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in an altercation that claimed the life of Genesee County Sheriff’s Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello.
Elmore pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter stemming from a March 10 incident at Batavia Downs Casino. Authorities say Elmore, alongside 39-year-old Lyndsey Wilcox, was involved in a verbal confrontation that escalated into tragedy.
Sgt. Sanfratello, a 32-year veteran of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, was escorting Elmore and Wilcox out of the casino when Wilcox became physically combative. During her arrest, Elmore intervened, attacking the sergeant. Attempts to subdue Elmore with a Taser proved ineffective.
Amid the struggle, Sgt. Sanfratello collapsed. Despite immediate CPR efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wilcox, who pleaded guilty to second-degree assault for her role in the incident, awaits sentencing on January 21, 2025.
