(WNY News Now) – A Pennsylvania State Police Corporal is facing serious charges after investigators uncovered thousands of pornographic files, including AI-generated “deepfakes,” on his work computer.
HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry announced Wednesday that Corporal Stephen M. Kamnik, 38, of Havertown, is facing charges for allegedly storing thousands of pornographic images and videos, including AI-generated content, on a work computer.
Kamnik, stationed at Troop K in Schwenksville, Montgomery County, was found to have a hard drive containing explicit material, including “deepfakes” created with software that generates artificial images and videos using real individuals’ photos or videos.
The investigation revealed potential misuse of department resources. Kamnik has been charged with felony unauthorized use of a computer and misdemeanor misapplication of entrusted property. Pennsylvania State Police filed the charges following the seizure of the work computer during an internal investigation.
Kamnik surrendered voluntarily on Wednesday and was arraigned. He was released on $1,000 unsecured bail.
Kamnik, a state trooper since 2011, has been suspended without pay while the investigation continues. Senior Deputy Attorney General James Price will prosecute the case.
As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
