(WNY News Now) – Authorities arrested a 23-year-old Angola resident early Monday under Leandra’s Law after his vehicle landed in a ditch on Mapleton Road, with four juveniles inside.

Pendleton, NY — A reported vehicle in a ditch led Niagara County deputies to the arrest of 23-year-old Alexander J. Tasseff from the Village of Angola under Leandra’s Law. Deputies Sikora and Gilhousen responded to the 4500 block of Mapleton Road at approximately 1:58 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered Tasseff’s vehicle and observed signs of intoxication during their investigation. Tasseff was taken into custody and charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated under Leandra’s Law (Felony), Driving While Intoxicated (Misdemeanor), Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Misdemeanor), and additional vehicle and traffic violations.

Inside the vehicle were four juveniles, aged 15 to 16. Authorities ensured their safe return home.

Tasseff was transported to the Niagara County Jail, where he awaits arraignment in Niagara County CAP Court.

Leandra’s Law, named after 11-year-old Leandra Rosado, enhances penalties for driving while intoxicated with passengers under 16 years of age. Violators face felony charges regardless of prior DWI convictions.

As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
