(WNY News Now) – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office warns residents about a scam targeting SNAP recipients, urging them to safeguard their EBT card information.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Department of Mental Hygiene and Social Services, has issued a scam alert following multiple reports of fraudulent activity targeting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients.

Residents have reported receiving text messages stating, “We’ve deactivated your food benefits card. Call 888-421-6229 to restore its use.” The message prompts individuals to enter their EBT card number and PIN. Once provided, scammers gain access to the account and quickly deplete the funds.

Officials stress that funds lost through this scam are non-refundable under New York State guidelines.

Protect Your Benefits
Authorities are urging SNAP recipients to remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal card details over the phone, via text, or through email. If assistance is needed with your benefits, contact your local social services office directly.
