(WNY News Now) – A Lakeshore Flood Warning has been issued for Erie and Chautauqua counties from 10 AM on January 27 until 4 AM on January 28 due to rising water levels and dangerous wave action along Lake Erie.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo has issued a Lakeshore Flood Warning for Erie and Chautauqua counties, starting at 10 AM on January 27 and lasting until 4 AM on January 28. This warning comes as water levels are expected to rise rapidly along the eastern shore of Lake Erie, with significant flooding impacts for lakeside areas.

Flooding is anticipated in several high-risk locations, including Route 5 in Hamburg, Buffalo Harbor and Canalside, Dunkirk Harbor, and other flood-prone regions. Areas along the shoreline are expected to experience dangerous conditions due to high waves and rising water. Additionally, significant shoreline erosion is expected, threatening local infrastructure and safety.

For residents and visitors along the affected areas, it is critical to heed the warning. The NWS emphasizes staying away from breakwaters, piers, rock outcroppings, and beaches. Waves can be more powerful than they appear, with the potential to wash individuals into the lake. Authorities are also advising against boating in the affected areas due to extremely dangerous conditions.
