(WNY News Now) – New “No Smoking” Signs Installed to Protect Public Health.

James Prendergast Library installs new “No Smoking” signs in compliance with New York Public Health Law 1399-o.
New signage has been installed in the James Prendergast Library’s front lawn and entrance, stating that smoking is prohibited within 100 feet of the library’s entire property.
This signage reflects New York Public Health Law 1399-o. The law states that “Smoking shall not be permitted and no person shall smoke within one hundred feet of the entrances, exits or outdoor areas of any public or association library.” Accordingly, smoking is not permitted in the library’s outdoor areas, in the parking lot, or on the sidewalks around the library.
The library is excited to be taking additional steps to protect the health of all library patrons. Patrons of all ages visit the library – we welcome infants, children, and seniors through our doors each day. Smoking poses a serious health risk to these more vulnerable populations, and every library patron should be able to enjoy a smoke-free environment as they arrive at the library.
The library’s outdoor space is a valuable asset to our community. Recent grant projects have enhanced the front walkway with a new patio and seating, and more updates are coming soon – this new signage is the first of many changes coming to the library’s front entrance.
The library was awarded a New York State Aid for Library Construction Grant to update the front entrance of the library. The project will improve accessibility, services, and security, with changes including new automatic doors and an expanded front entrance area. More details are coming soon about this exciting project, which is slated to begin in April.
