(WNY News Now) – SALAMANCA, NY – A Salamanca man was taken into custody late Sunday night following an altercation that led to an assault charge.

According to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested Derik N. Nelson, 26, at approximately 11:52 p.m. on March 23, 2025, after he allegedly assaulted another individual at a residence in the Town of Salamanca. Nelson fled the scene on foot, prompting a pursuit into the City of Salamanca. Deputies, with assistance from the Salamanca Police Department, located and apprehended him.

Nelson was charged with Assault in the Third Degree and subsequently released with an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to appear in Salamanca Town Court in April 2025 to answer the charge.

As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
