(WNY News Now) – The Dunkirk Police Department is alerting residents to an uptick in scam calls targeting personal and financial information.
The Dunkirk Police Department has issued a public warning following multiple reports of scam calls circulating in the city throughout March and April 2025. The calls involve unknown individuals attempting to obtain sensitive personal information from unsuspecting residents.
According to the department, these scammers may impersonate local law enforcement or government agencies in an effort to appear legitimate. Citizens are being urged to stay alert and not to share private information such as Social Security numbers, bank account details, or other sensitive data with unknown callers.
A common tactic reported includes fraudulent requests for payment using gift cards, particularly Apple or Visa-branded cards. The Dunkirk Police emphasized that neither their department nor any legitimate government agency will request payments through gift cards or online transfers.
The department encourages anyone who may have received such a call or fallen victim to report the incident promptly. Staying informed and cautious is the best defense against these types of scams.
