(WNY News Now) – Syracuse Police have released the name of the officer involved in the May 13 shooting on North Townsend Street as state and local investigations continue.

The Syracuse Police Department has identified Officer Chris Mazzotti as the officer who discharged his service weapon during the officer-involved shooting on North Townsend Street. According to department officials, Officer Mazzotti fired one shot during the incident and was the only officer to discharge a weapon.

The shooting occurred on Tuesday, May 13, at approximately 9:54 p.m., when officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 200 block of North Townsend Street. Upon arrival, officers encountered an active shooter situation inside a building. According to police, officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Donnell Hogan, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was recovered.

Per standard procedure, the New York State Attorney General’s Office and the Syracuse Police Department are both conducting independent investigations into the shooting.

Authorities emphasize that the investigation remains active and ongoing. The Syracuse Police Department is asking anyone with relevant information to contact its Criminal Investigations Division at (315) 442-5222.

Officials have stated there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
