(WNY News Now) – A 48-year-old Olean resident was arrested after allegedly damaging merchandise inside a Walmart in Allegany.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office has reported the arrest of Shawn M. Chastain, 48, of Olean, following an incident of criminal mischief that occurred on the morning of May 23, 2025.

According to authorities, deputies responded to the Walmart Supercenter located in the Town of Allegany after store staff observed an individual intentionally damaging store merchandise. The incident was promptly reported to law enforcement.

Following an investigation at the scene, deputies identified and arrested Chastain. He was charged with criminal mischief and taken into custody without incident. Chastain was later processed and released with an appearance ticket.

He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Allegany Court at a future date to answer the charge. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
