(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. – U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that Alexander Straub, 27, of Mississauga, Ontario, has been arrested and charged by criminal complaint with illegal entry into the United States. The charge carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a $5,000 fine.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Irvin Jefferson, who is handling the case, Straub was encountered by law enforcement on August 30, 2025, at approximately 11:30 p.m. near a residence in Lewiston, New York. U.S. Border Patrol agents located an Ontario driver’s license in his possession. A records check confirmed that Straub was in the country unlawfully and did not have the required immigration documents to be legally present.
The investigation also revealed that Straub had previously attempted to enter the United States on two occasions at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls—on August 25 and August 26, 2025. Both attempts were denied by border officials.
Straub is currently facing federal charges as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative aimed at addressing unlawful immigration, disrupting transnational criminal organizations, and strengthening public safety.
The case is being investigated by the U.S. Border Patrol Niagara Falls Station, led by Patrol Agent in Charge Brady Waikal.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
