(WNY News Now) – New York Attorney General Letitia James denounced her indictment by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, calling it a politically motivated attack orchestrated by former President Donald Trump.
NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday issued a forceful statement after being indicted by federal prosecutors in Virginia, alleging that the charges are part of what she described as Donald Trump’s ongoing “desperate weaponization of our justice system.”
James said the indictment followed the dismissal of a U.S. attorney who reportedly refused to pursue charges against her, claiming the move demonstrates political interference at the highest levels of government. “He is forcing federal law enforcement agencies to do his bidding, all because I did my job as the New York State Attorney General.” said James.
The attorney general maintained her innocence, labeling the charges “baseless” and asserting that Trump’s actions represent “a grave violation of our Constitutional order.” She urged bipartisan condemnation of what she described as a “blatant perversion of our system of justice.”
James reiterated her commitment to the civil fraud case her office brought against the Trump Organization, emphasizing that the case was rooted in “facts and evidence – not politics.” New York courts have already ruled that Trump, his company, and his sons were liable for fraud following a lengthy investigation led by her office.
“I stand strongly behind my office’s litigation against the Trump Organization,” James stated. “Judges have upheld the trial court’s finding that Donald Trump, his company, and his two sons are liable for fraud.”
Concluding her statement, James said she remains “fearless” in the face of the charges and vowed to continue serving New Yorkers. “I am a proud woman of faith, and I know that faith and fear cannot share the same space. And so today I am not fearful, I am fearless, and as my faith teaches me, no weapon formed against me shall prosper.” she said. “We will fight these baseless charges aggressively, and my office will continue to fiercely protect New Yorkers and their rights. And I will continue to do my job.”
