(WNY News Now) – Governor Kathy Hochul calls the Court of Appeals’ unanimous ruling a “victory for democracy,” affirming New York’s move to align local elections with state and federal races.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement Thursday following the New York Court of Appeals’ unanimous decision to uphold the state’s even-year election law, which shifts many local elections to coincide with state and federal election years.

“The Court of Appeals’ unanimous decision to uphold New York’s even-year election law is a victory for democracy and all New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said. “I championed this legislation because I believe our state is stronger when more people have the opportunity to make their voices heard.”

The law, enacted in 2023, was designed to increase voter turnout by holding local elections during the same years as higher-profile contests for state and national offices. Supporters argue that aligning election calendars will improve participation and engagement, while opponents have expressed concerns about local issues being overshadowed by statewide and federal campaigns.

Governor Hochul emphasized that the ruling reinforces New York’s commitment to expanding access to the ballot box. “By aligning local elections with the state and federal calendar, we’re making it easier for New Yorkers to participate in government,” she said. “At a time when voting rights are under attack across the nation, New York is proudly moving in the opposite direction.”
