(WNY News Now) – A 71-year-old Dunkirk man was charged with driving while intoxicated following a crash involving a pickup truck near Central Avenue and Waldorff Road on April 16, according to the Dunkirk Police Department.

DUNKIRK, N.Y. — Officers from the Dunkirk Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident with reported personal injuries at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the intersection of Central Avenue and Waldorff Road.

Police said that upon arrival, officers located a pickup truck that had crashed through a fence and traveled up an embankment leading to the I-90 Thruway overpass. The vehicle ultimately became entangled in a guardrail near the bridge.

Emergency responders from the Dunkirk Fire Department extricated the driver, identified as Steven F. Strefeler, 71, of Dunkirk. He was transported by Alstar ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of what were described as minor injuries.

According to police, officers determined that Strefeler was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated under New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, along with additional traffic violations.

Strefeler was released on appearance tickets and is scheduled to answer the charges in court at a later date. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
