(WNY News Now) – A 40-year-old Portville man was arrested Aug. 22 after Cattaraugus County sheriff’s deputies located a vehicle reported stolen and found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Cattaraugus County sheriff’s deputies were investigating a reported stolen vehicle when they spotted one matching its description at about 10:57 a.m. Saturday at a Portville Ceres Road address in Portville.

Deputies spoke with Paul R. Smith, 40, of Portville, who had sole possession of the vehicle. An investigation confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Smith was taken into custody. Deputies also reported finding approximately 9.8 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in his possession.

Smith was transported to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, where he was processed and issued an appearance ticket. He was then turned over to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, which had an outstanding warrant for him.

Smith was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, and criminal possession of stolen property.

The charges are allegations, and Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
