(WNY News Now) – A 43-year-old Brocton woman was taken into custody after Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported altercation Sunday evening in the Town of Portland.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence on Route 380 at about 6:01 p.m. Sept. 6 for a reported altercation.

Deputies determined that Jessica L. Betts, 43, allegedly struck and caused physical harm to another person at the residence. Authorities also allege that Betts obstructed the victim’s breathing during the incident.

The incident allegedly occurred in the presence of a child, according to the sheriff’s office.

Betts was taken into custody and transported to the Chautauqua County Jail for centralized arraignment proceedings.

She was charged with second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Betts is scheduled to appear in Town of Portland Court at a later date to answer the charges.

The allegations are not findings of guilt, and the charges will be addressed through the court process.
