Area Woman Charged In Welfare Fraud Case

JAMESTOWN – A Bemus Point woman allegedly received $2,134 in unentitled benefits between Jul. and Oct. 2015, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

Laura A. Smith, 49, allegedly failed to notify the Chautauqua County Department of Social Services that her boyfriend had income/employment while residing with Smith.

Smith is charged with fourth-degree welfare fraud, first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, misuse of food stamps (over $1,000) and fourth-degree grand larceny. Smith is scheduled to appear in City of Jamestown Court at a later date.
