MAYVILLE – The unemployment rate in Chautauqua County dropped 0.2 percent to 5.3 percent in February, according to the latest jobless report from the State Labor Department.

The county’s jobless rate in February was 5.3%, which is down from 5.5% in January. However, that remains higher than the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, which remained unchanged at 3.9 percent. Cattaraugus County’s jobless rate for the same month was 5.7 percent.

The lowest unemployment rate in New York is in Tompkins County at 3.6 percent. The highest is Hamilton County with an 8.2 percent unemployment rate.

The national unemployment rate fell from 4 percent in January to 3.8 percent in February. The number of reported unemployed people in the U.S. fell from 6.5 million people to 6.2 million, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
