ELLERY – An Ohio man is facing a felony weapon possession charge after New York State Police alleged he had a firearm without a state pistol permit on Thursday.

Troopers say James Smith, 53, of Ravenna, Ohio, is charged with criminal possession of a firearm.

While conducting a commercial vehicle inspection at the Ellery Rest Area, troopers say Smith was found to be in possession of a black semiautomatic pistol without a New York State Pistol Permit.

Police say Smith was placed under arrest, processed and issued an appearance ticket.

He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Ellery Court on a later date to answer the charge.
