WESTFIELD – Police have identified the woman who was struck and killed by a train in Westfield on Thursday afternoon.

The Westfield Police Department says 62-year-old Dixie Smith, of Sherman, was last seen walking on the CSX Railroad Tracks around 3:15 p.m. before she was hit.

Smith, police say, was located underneath the train and later pronounced deceased by the Chautauqua County Coroner.

Investigators tell WNY News Now they were able to identify the woman only after locating her vehicle parked nearby.

An initial search for Smith took place between North Gale and Franklin Streets in the village shortly after the incident was phoned into emergency services.

The Westfield, Mayville and Portland Fire Departments utilized all-terrain vehicles in the search.

The Westfield Police Department is being assisted by the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office in their ongoing investigation.
