JAMESTOWN – Gas prices in the Jamestown area continue to rise with prices at some stations reaching near $3 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy.com’s daily survey, the average price is now $2.95 per gallon, up six cents from just last week.

The local average is on par with prices statewide. New York’s average price per gallon is $2.95, up three cents. The national average for a gallon of gas is now $2.90, up one cent from last week.

One year ago, the national average was $1.78, while New York’s was $2.16.

High oil prices are blamed for the increase, with AAA reporting that gasoline stocks increased in the U.S. last week and oil prices remain up over $60 per barrel.

The travel agency says prices also jumped after OPEC confirmed plans to increase crude production in May.
