ERIE (Erie News Now) – Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf visited the United Steelworkers headquarters in downtown Erie Thursday morning to highlight his initiative to provide quality jobs and safe workplaces in the commonwealth.

“Making workplaces safer, guaranteeing paid sick leave and promoting higher wages will all make Pennsylvania a better place for workers and for businesses.”

Gov. Wolf spoke to Erie labor workers about his recent executive order. He is calling for safer workplaces, better wages, and more quality jobs amid the current labor shortage.

“What can we do about this worker shortage?,” said Wolf. “Well, I got a suggestion. How about if we make the workplace a little more attractive, wouldn’t that be a good thing?”

In August, 4.3 million Americans voluntarily left their jobs in August.

Wolf hopes more options and flexibility will get Pennsylvanians back to work.

“They have the flexibility to look for jobs that provide the best opportunities for them and their families, and this is this is great,” said Wolf.

Another pivotal aspect in his initiative is raising the minimum wage.

“We’re the lowest of all the states in this area,” said Wolf. “That’s an embarrassment.”

He’s asking the general assembly to do more.
