Over 850 New COVID-19 Reported In Chautauqua County Last Week

JAMESTOWN – Over 850 new COVID-19 infections were reported in Chautauqua County last week.

According to the latest update from the County Health Department, this is the first time in three weeks cases have lodged an increase.

As of Wednesday’s update, there are now 887 active cases with 182 of them in Jamestown.

There are 24 people hospitalized, down from 15 last week. However, the increase in hospitalizations continues to be among the top concerns for local health leaders, who say the majority of those admitted to local facilities are not vaccinated.

“What we’ve seen with the Omicron, it is super contagious. Fortunately, we are seeing some less severity of illness with the Omicron variant,” Health Director Christine Schuyler told WNY News Now. “But we’re not seeing a decreased stress on our hospital systems. So while there is less severity in some people, there’s just so much of it. So many people are sick.”

Additionally, 12 new deaths linked to the virus were reported during the update.
