FREDONIA – A 70-year-old woman died in an early morning fire in the Village of Fredonia on Tuesday.
The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reports the woman, identified as Patricia Ulkins, lived in the lower apartment at 111 Center Street.
Fire crews were called to the scene around 6 a.m. Tuesday. The occupants of the upper apartment were able to escape the flames. Another person living downstairs also got out, only suffering minor injuries.
Ulkins, deputies say, was not able to evacuate the house, however. Her body was recovered in fire debris later in the day Tuesday and was turned over to the Chautauqua County Coroner.
The fire, deputies report, likely started on the first floor near the center of the home. Due to the severity of damage, it is unknown why the fire started; however deputies don’t believe it is suspicious in nature.

FREDONIA – Fire crews confronted arctic like wind chills while working to knock down a house fire in the Village of Fredonia on Tuesday morning.

Crews were called to 111 Center Street around 6 a.m. Initial reports from the scene indicate firefighters had issues accessing water from hydrants due to the bitter cold.
At that time, the feels like temperature in the village was -1 degrees.

As a result, additional aid was called to the scene with crews from the City of Dunkirk, East and West Dunkirk crews, Village of Brocton, Ellery, Sheridan and Stockton responding to provide needed water tankers to fight the flames. Chautauqua County EMS also responded.
It is unclear if any injuries were reported as a result of the weather or fire.
Chautauqua County Fire Investigators are now on scene and working to determine a cause.
