WARREN, Pa. (Erie News Now) – Students in Warren County are raising money to help refugees from Ukraine, and Friday, they got to meet some of the people they’ve helped so far.
Decades ago, Father Rick Tomasone of Saint Joseph’s in Warren County mentored a Slovakian student at Kennedy Catholic High School, coaching her basketball team.
Over the years, they’ve stayed touch, and when war broke out, Barbora Fabianova told Fr. Tomasone she was taking in refugees.
So students and parishioners started raising money, sending Barbora more than five thousand dollars and raising $12,000 more to send.
They are even raising money in school, as grades compete to see who can raise the most.
Students got to meet Barbora and the refugees she’s caring for during a video call with the entire school.
” I think it’s a reflection of God’s beauty in our midst,” Tomasone said. “There’s a great deal of ugliness in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but it’s wonderful to know people will be generous and giving.”
If you’d like to help, you can send a check to St. Joseph Parish in Warren. Just mark “refugees” on the subject line.
