WASHINGTON, D.C. – History has been made. The Senate voted to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. Following the 53 to 47 vote, the Senate chamber erupted with applause, mostly coming from the Democrats.

“On this vote, the yays are 53 and the nays are 47 and this nomination is confirmed,” said Vice President Kamala Harris presiding over the vote.

Three Senate Republicans: Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Mitt Romney were the only Republicans to join with the Dems on confirming Jackson. Senators have spent days scrutinizing and questioning Jackson’s judicial philosophy and judicial records. The democrats said she is highly qualified for this position and claim she is a great nominee for both sides of the aisle. But most Republicans disagree. They’re describing Jackson as a leftist judge and claim she has coddled criminals with her sentencing history. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell attacked the Dems for trying to stack the court and said the Senate should confirm judges who will honor the constitution and not supplant it.

“The road to a healthy court and a healthy country is not striking some balance where some justices stick to the text and some justices try to make policy,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell (R- KY). “The solution is for all the justices to stay in their lane.”

“Today is a culmination, a culmination of six weeks where this chamber has examined, questioned and debated judge Jackson on her record and her qualifications,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D- NY). “Every step of the way the judge has proved herself qualified and prepared to serve on the court. As I’ve said she encapsulates the three B’s: brilliant, beloved and belongs, she belongs on this Supreme Court.”

Our local congressional members are split on this nomination. Sen. Pat Toomey (R- PA) voted against the nomination. He has made it known that he does not support her bid to the Supreme Court. He says her “methodology is unhelpful for determining what her foundation is for interpreting statutory and constitutional text.” Our local Democratic Senators: Bob Casey (D- PA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D- NY) and Chuck Schumer (D- NY) voted for Jackson. After the final vote was counted, they were part of the celebratory cheering in the chamber.

Jackson’s confirmation is a huge win for President Biden. During his presidential campaign, he made a promise that if he had the opportunity to nominate someone for the Supreme Court, he would choose a Black woman. He said the Court should reflect what America looks like.

Jackson is replacing justice Stephen Breyer. We expect him to step down sometime this summer.
