ERIE, Pa. (Erie News Now) – After a two-year hiatus, the Flagship Niagara League is getting ready to kick off its sailing season, and preparations are underway right now to get Erie’s two Tall Ships ready for the water.
A mix of paid crew members and volunteers have been working all winter long to get the Brig Niagara and the Lettie G. Howard ready to sail.
It’s a process that takes months, but Captain William Sabatini, who’s back in command of the Niagara, says he’s excited to get the ships sailing for the first time since 2019.
“It’s exciting to get back to doing what we do and going sailing, the plan is were going to have the Lettie G up and sailing by the first week of May, then were going to take the cover off Niagara and have the Niagara sailing by the first week of June,” said Sabatini.
This year’s sailing season will be capped off with the popular Parade of Sails, which will kick off the Tall Ships Festival right here in Erie, August 25-28.
