JAMESTOWN – A longtime ethnic tradition is taking place this weekend in Jamestown, kicking off festivities with a Viking Boat Launch.

The Scandinavian Folk Festival is held indoors for the first time at the Northwest Arena in Jamestown.

Friday morning, the Norseman Viking Ship was launched into the Chadakoin River.

This year will mark the 19th annual celebration of the Scandinavian Folk Festival, which has organizers excited.

From live music, traditional Scandinavian food, folk dancing, a lot will be included in this year’s celebration.

“We have an awful lot to be thankful for, for the Viking Culture. Rules of law, you might think it started in England but I think it started a little bit before that. Sailing, they used what they called a sun compass or sunstone. They did not hug the shore, they went out into the sea,” said Norseman Viking Ship Captain, Captain David “Wolf” Sutton Sr.

The Festival itself will be held over the course of two days, Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. both days and ending Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. As far as entry fees are concerned, it costs $5.00 per person, but children 16 years and under can get in free.
